Operation Sharehouse

Clark and I are attending Operation Sharehouse at St. Timothy's on March 10th (details below). I e-mailed Mark to see if I could bring Clark and if there would be things he could do to help and participate. His e-mail is also copied below. Feel free to join us! I think this will be a cool opportunity for the kids (and us!) to do a service project.

Operation Sharehouse Returns March 10

Operation Sharehouse will return to Drake Hall on Saturday, March 10, 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m. to package ingredients for 15,000 meals for the underprivileged. Sixty plus volunteers of all ages are needed to reach the goal during this intergenerational event. Sign up here! For further information, contact Mark Vasudevan (403-4363)

Meg,

Thanks for the interest.

I am sure that Clark can help if he is with you or another adult (i.e. supervised). The adults have a great time and have such a relaxed demeanor (because of the importance of the mission) and should have no problems helping him out. We have had 3 – 4 year olds before. I feel confident that we can get something for him to do.

There is a gong that needs banging every time we complete 1000 meals. I am sure that he will like that.

The Packaging station is generally staffed with about four adults who measure ingredients and pour them into Ziploc containers. If you are on one of those stations he could help.

Another option is as a “runner” who carries a few packets at a time to the weighing stations. These are almose exclusively staffed with children.

He can also help spot those stations that need filling and tell those people who fill the ingredients where to go.

It is an EXTREMELY REWARDING experience as it brings home the awareness as how lucky we are to have food on the table. I hope that at least the both of you join in the event. Please feel free to bring along anybody else that you know as the more people we get to help the better.

  1. Count Ella and I in! I don't think I can watch both kids and actually help so I will see if a friend can watch Coop. This sounds so great! Thank you for telling us about it:)

  2. I have helped with several food packaging things before, and it is a great experience! I don't think that I can come to help and bring zade and jude, though, so I'll have to pass. Have fun!

  3. So I have been thinking about some other service projects that we could do with the kids. What about getting some names of some elderly people, maybe from church or a nursing home, and making birthday cards for them? Then we could go distribute and visit them for just a little while (maybe like 2 of us at a time for like 15 or 20 minutes). Or we could give the nursing home the cards to give them to the recipients on their birthday. I don't know...just a thought.

  4. I don't think I'll be doing it this year since Brian is on home call and I don't think I'll be much help with two kiddos to deal with. Thanks for sharing!
